About Roland
Long ago, my partner Martine and I bought our first house. We were over the moon. One evening, our upstairs neighbour knocked on the door to tell us that the roof was leaking and asked whether we would contribute to the repair costs. That was when we discovered that we were living in a Homeowners Association. A whole new world opened up for us.
After a career as a driving instructor in the Dutch army, followed by a period working at KLM, I entered the social housing sector in 1994 and eventually moved into HOA management. Through my first experience within an HOA, I became motivated to improve the way HOAs are managed, particularly from the perspective of the owners. Together with Martine, I therefore started a management office in the Netherlands 29 years ago, which ultimately managed multiple HOAs.
Passion and enthusiasm
I have always enjoyed inspiring and motivating people. And in this way, to achieve the best performance for a small organization such as an HOA, with a focus on future developments and challenges. It is my passion to have the dedication to achieve the best result for HOAs; that is the challenge for me. Ensuring that an HOA functions well and acts in accordance with the laws and regulations that apply within HOAs and thereby representing the interests of the owners.
My interests lie in advising on complex issues in the field of construction (technology) to processes and procedures within HOAs. Privately, I am a great enthusiast of Art Deco, American classic cars, drag racing, sun and sea, good food, and enjoying the good life. Fortunately, many of these things can be found in Curaçao!
Living in Curaçao
So together with Martine, I have been coming to Curaçao with pleasure for years, and of course we also noticed buildings there that had more than one owner. Those must also be HOAs, we thought. Because life in Curaçao seems pleasant to us, we decided to settle in Curaçao. You naturally don’t take this step thoughtlessly, and we wondered: What will we do in Curaçao?
This is how the idea arose not to “leave behind” our knowledge and expertise but to put it to good use for beautiful Curaçao.
In doing so, we focus on the future, which means we want to establish an organization in Curaçao that wants to contribute to professionalizing the management of HOAs in Curaçao.
Building an organization that better organizes and manages the management of HOAs in Curaçao, making HOAs more attractive to (new) owners. An HOA that is well managed and thus radiates quality is an HOA where new owners will invest more quickly. A win-win situation for the owners in the HOA itself, (project) developers, the local economy, and ultimately an improvement for beautiful Curaçao.
Furthermore, we hope, through our efforts, to establish an organization that can somewhat prevent the departure of young people from Curaçao (brain drain). We want to achieve this by offering vacancies to young people who want to build a career on the island. After all, the growth of HOAs on the island is increasing. Hopefully, managing HOAs in all its different facets provides sufficient reason for young people to apply their skills for HOAs on the island. The ultimate goal of the organization is that HOAs should be managed by the people of Curaçao. An HOA management organization that thereby also wants to contribute to Curaçao’s development.
Knowledge base for HOA management in Curaçao
Given this future vision, we have decided to establish a knowledge base for HOA Management in Curaçao where HOAs, their boards, owners, and (project) developers can get information about managing Homeowners Associations. Additionally, it is possible to request advice in the broadest sense about HOA matters, HOA procedures, and other HOA affairs.
